the myth about making internet money
the art of being a niche creator
The biggest myth about making money on the internet is that you need to be in the top 1% of creators to do so.
Venture capitalists often see the creator economy as a winner-takes-all market where only the top 1% take 99% of the market. Where if you are not MrBeast, you don’t stand a chance. This is a flawed view.
There are many niche creators with far smaller audiences building sustainable, profitable businesses without tens of thousands of followers.
Niche creators aren’t the same as lifestyle creators. Here are the main differences:
They are not celebrities
They are selling knowledge/insight/utility
Their content is about specific problems in a specific space.
Megan Lieu is a content creator who shares practical, career-focused content around data analytics. She has an audience of 120k on Instagram at the time of writing this and is a full-time creator with over $40k/month.
She embodies the niche creator model: her audience follows her for insights, not intimacy. It’s less about personal life, more about practical value.
When you are a niche creator, you can often earn more with a smaller audience because your content solves a specific problem for a highly targeted group willing to pay for it.
We also really liked this video by Ali Abdaal a doctor-turned-creator who’s probably the face of what it means to be an online entrepreneur in this day.
Ali started off as a niche creator in studying and productivity but has since grown far beyond it expanding into business and personal dvelopment.
Some insights from the video:
You don't really need a good idea to start a business, you just need any idea to start a business.
Time spent on a business that fails is not time wasted; it's an investment to learn and develop skills.
This whole game of business is a game of being comfortable with uncertainty and being comfortable with discomfort.
